WHAT IS CLEFT?

Cleft lip and palate is a birth defect that occurs in the womb between the fourth and eighth week of pregnancy. When the normal fusion of the lip and palate tissues does not occur it results in an opening in the lip or roof of the mouth. It can be unilateral (one sided) or bilateral (both sides). It is possible for the child to have a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or both cleft lip and cleft palate, because the lip and palate tissues develop separately.

WHAT KINDS OF PROBLEMS COULD CLEFT CHILD HAVE?

  • Cosmetic:  Facial disfigurement.  Psycho-social stigma to the child and parents
  • Feeding:  Frequent regurgitation of milk and food from nose.
  • Dental development:  Teeth in the area of the cleft may be missing or improperly positioned. This may affect your child's appearance and chewing ability.
  • Speech difficulties:  Minimal speech problems in cleft lip children; however, often children with cleft palates benefit greatly from early speech therapy.
