We at Holy Spirit Hospital are delighted to announce the addition of our new OCT machine in the Ophthalmology Department.
OCT is an excellent technology for performing high resolution cross sectional imaging to visualise different layers of the retina and optic nerve in a living eye. Previously we were only able to see this view of an eye with tissue sections after the patient was deceased or if the eye was removed.
This detailed image of the retina allows to see the retina at a microscopic level and detect various disorders in the retina. OCT is useful for detection and management of age related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, edema due to venous occlusions,macular degenerations in hereditary conditions, post trauma and many other retinal diseases.
It is used extensively in the diagnosis and progression of glaucoma, a disease which can cause irreversible blindness. It in also used to acquire anterior segment OCT images, which help in visualisation of angle structures and corneal pathologies. Topcon Maestro 2 not only provides fully automated, high definition OCT images but also enables to acquire retina images which help in documentation and explaining the condition to the patient.
