Surgical Oncology Services:
Department of Surgical Oncology
The cancer surgeons involvement in the management of cancer is on a number of fronts.
A biopsy, where part of the tumor is surgically removed and subjected to pathological examination is, in the case of most malignancies, a vital step in cancer management. Various methods of obtaining a biopsy include: FNAC, Core needle biopsy, Guided biopsy, wedge biopsy and excision biopsy. These can be performed underlocal or general anesthesia and auually done as a out patient procedure.
Surgery with curative intent. Here surgery alone or in conjuction with other modalities (chemotherapy and radiotherapy) is performed with an attempt to cure the patient. Surgical principles are continuously evolving for various cancers and Holy Spirit Hospital has a panel of experienced cancer surgeons committed to delivering surgical treatment in keeping with international trends and evidence based guidelines. There are a number of Surgical Operation Theatres which are well equipped with the latest equipment to deal with a wide variety of surgeries.
Palliative surgery. Often a disease may not be curable. Even in these situations surgery often plays a vital role in trying to reduce patient suffering and improving quality of life.
The Oncosurgeon is often called upon to assist other modalities of treatment. eg Insertion of Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices for delivery of chemotherapy.
